BVetMed Veterinary Gateway Programme
About this course
Veterinary medicine is one of the most demanding and rewarding professional degrees available, preparing you to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease in animals across a wide range of species, from companion animals and livestock to exotic and wild animals. It requires a combination of deep scientific knowledge in biology, physiology, pharmacology, and pathology with exceptional clinical skills, professional judgement, and the communication abilities needed to work with owners and colleagues in complex and sometimes emotionally charged situations. The Royal Veterinary College's Veterinary Gateway Programme is a six-year full-time degree designed for students who want to study veterinary medicine but who might not otherwise meet the standard entry requirements. The programme integrates an additional preparatory year that builds the scientific knowledge and academic skills needed to succeed in the main veterinary curriculum, making the veterinary profession more accessible to students with genuine potential and the right character for the work. You will develop your veterinary knowledge and clinical skills progressively across the full programme, supported by a sandwich year and work placements that give you substantial hands-on experience with animals in clinical settings before you qualify. Graduates from this programme are eligible to register with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and practise as veterinary surgeons in the UK and, with appropriate recognition, internationally. Career paths span companion animal practice, equine work, farm animal practice, zoo and wildlife medicine, public health and meat inspection, military veterinary work, and veterinary research. Many veterinary surgeons develop specialist expertise in areas such as surgery, internal medicine, dermatology, or oncology through further training and postgraduate qualifications. The profession offers high levels of job satisfaction and consistent demand for well-qualified practitioners.
