BEng Biomedical Engineering
About this course
Biomedical engineering applies the principles and methods of engineering to problems in medicine and biology, designing the devices, systems, and materials that make modern healthcare possible. Pacemakers, prosthetic limbs, imaging systems, minimally invasive surgical tools, biosensors, and tissue-engineered scaffolds are all products of biomedical engineering, and the field is advancing rapidly as technologies from robotics, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence open new possibilities for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. It is a discipline with genuine consequence, one where engineering innovation directly improves and extends people's lives. At Swansea, this three-year full-time programme combines engineering principles with a rigorous grounding in biology and physiology, giving you the dual perspective needed to design systems that must function within the complex and variable environment of the human body. You will study mechanical and electrical engineering fundamentals alongside biomechanics, bioelectronics, medical instrumentation, and the biology of tissues and physiological systems. The programme reflects the view that the convergence of engineering and medicine is generating genuinely important new technologies, and it prepares you to participate in that convergence as a practitioner rather than a spectator. Graduates from biomedical engineering programmes go on to work in the medical device industry, hospital clinical engineering, pharmaceutical manufacturing, research and development, and regulatory affairs. The engineering skills developed are also valuable in defence, aerospace, and other high-technology sectors. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in biomedical engineering, clinical engineering, or related fields, and some pursue clinical careers after additional training. The combination of engineering rigour and medical application makes biomedical engineering one of the most purposeful and impactful specialisms available in engineering education.
