BA Creative Writing
About this course
Creative writing is both a craft and a discipline: a practice that demands imaginative freedom and technical precision in equal measure. It encompasses fiction, poetry, scriptwriting, creative non-fiction and hybrid forms, and at its best it develops writers who are not only skilled in their chosen form but genuinely curious about language, form and the relationship between what is written and what is experienced. A degree in creative writing provides something that solitary practice alone cannot: a structured environment of workshops, feedback, critical engagement and sustained conversation about what good writing does and why. At Edge Hill University, a programme with a strong reputation in creative writing, this part-time degree allows you to develop your practice at a pace that suits other commitments. The degree includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, providing routes to build experience and perspective alongside your writing development. You will work across multiple genres, developing your own voice and craft while engaging critically with the work of published writers and with the literary traditions and contemporary contexts your writing inhabits. Workshops, where you share and discuss each other's work in progress, are central to the degree: giving and receiving honest, constructive feedback is one of the most valuable skills the programme develops. The abilities that creative writing sharpens, including clear and compelling communication, imaginative thinking, revision and self-criticism, attention to an audience and comfort with ambiguity, have broad professional application across many fields. Graduates go on to work as writers, editors, copywriters, journalists, script developers, teachers, arts workers and publishing professionals. Edge Hill's creative writing programme has a notable track record of graduates who have published fiction, poetry and non-fiction. Further study in creative writing or related disciplines is also a common route, including postgraduate writing programmes for those wishing to deepen their practice or move into the academy.
