BArch Architecture
About this course
Architecture is the discipline that conceives and creates the built environment in which human life unfolds. It encompasses aesthetic imagination, structural and environmental engineering, social responsibility, and the management of complex projects over extended timescales. Buildings are simultaneously technical artefacts and cultural statements, and studying architecture requires you to engage rigorously with all of these dimensions. The profession carries significant public responsibility, because the decisions architects make shape how communities live for generations. At Sheffield Hallam, the emphasis on applied learning means this BArch Architecture course helps you develop your potential in ways that are directly connected to professional practice. You will develop your architectural design skills through studio-based projects at various scales, supported by technical studies in structures, building technology, and environmental design, and by engagement with the history and theory of architecture. The programme prepares you for professional architectural education and practice in a city with a rich architectural heritage and a vibrant contemporary built environment. It runs over three years full-time, with a typical entry tariff of 120 points. The BArch is the first stage on the route to professional registration as an architect, followed by further study and structured professional experience. Architects work in private practice, the public sector, property development, and academia, and the design, technical, and project management skills architecture develops are also valued in urban planning, interior design, and heritage conservation. Many graduates go on to Part 2 and Part 3 programmes to achieve full professional qualification with the Architects Registration Board.
