BSc Building Surveying
About this course
Building surveying is the professional discipline concerned with the assessment, maintenance, adaptation and management of the built environment, spanning residential and commercial buildings, historic structures and major infrastructure. Building surveyors advise on the condition and value of buildings, manage construction projects, handle disputes between clients and contractors, advise on planning and building regulations compliance, oversee refurbishment and conservation work, and assess the sustainability performance of buildings. The profession plays a critical role at a time when the UK faces major challenges in improving the energy efficiency of its existing building stock and adapting its infrastructure to a changing climate. At Wrexham University, this programme, which includes a foundation year providing an informed introduction to the aesthetic, functional, legal and environmental considerations that shape building assessment and refurbishment, prepares you to work in one of the core professions of the built environment. You will study the technology and construction of buildings, pathology and defect diagnosis, contract and property law, building measurement, sustainability and environmental performance, refurbishment and conservation, and project management. The breadth of the curriculum reflects the genuine breadth of the profession, which requires practitioners who can move between technical, legal and commercial dimensions of building work. Building surveying is a regulated profession, and graduates typically pursue chartership through the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors after graduating and entering practice. The degree provides the academic foundation for that professional route. Graduates work in building surveying practices, housing associations, local authorities, estate management companies, property consultancies, construction companies and public sector bodies. Career paths lead toward chartered building surveyor status and from there to senior roles in project management, management consultancy and leadership within surveying practices. Further study in building surveying, construction management or property is also an option.
