About this course

English as a degree subject is the study of literature in English, broadly conceived: the novels, poetry, drama, essays, and other forms that have been produced in the English language across centuries and across the world, from the Old English of Beowulf to the contemporary fiction of Kazuo Ishiguro or Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. It asks what texts mean and how they achieve their effects, how they are shaped by and in turn shape their historical and cultural contexts, and what reading carefully and critically can tell us about language, imagination, and human experience. At Northeastern University London, this three-year, full-time programme combines literary study with the distinctive educational philosophy of Northeastern, which has long emphasised experiential learning and the integration of academic and professional development. You will engage with a broad curriculum of English literature, reading across historical periods and genres and developing your critical and analytical skills through close engagement with texts. The programme builds strong written communication, the ability to construct sustained arguments from close reading and contextual knowledge, and the interpretive confidence that literary study at degree level produces. A typical entry tariff of 136 UCAS points indicates the academic level expected. English develops transferable skills that are genuinely valued across many professional contexts. The ability to read carefully, argue clearly, and write with precision and persuasion is required in law, the media, the civil service, publishing, marketing, and education, as well as in academic research. Graduates from English degrees pursue careers in publishing, journalism, education, the civil service, law, marketing and communications, the arts, and the creative industries. Many also proceed to postgraduate study in English literature, creative writing, media, or related fields. The critical and communicative foundation the degree provides is robust and adaptable.
