BSc Physics with Quantum Computing
About this course
Physics with Quantum Computing is a degree that combines the foundational science of the physical world with one of the most rapidly developing fields in contemporary technology. Physics provides the conceptual and mathematical framework for understanding matter, energy, and the laws that govern their behaviour across every scale from subatomic particles to cosmological structures. Quantum computing draws on the principles of quantum mechanics, in particular superposition and entanglement, to perform certain categories of computation far beyond the reach of classical computers, with potential applications in cryptography, materials science, drug discovery, and optimisation. At the University of Surrey, this three-year, full-time degree covers the full spectrum of quantum technologies, from lasers and photonics to quantum information, quantum physics, and quantum computing itself. You will develop a rigorous grounding in theoretical and experimental physics while acquiring specialist knowledge of quantum information theory and the physical architectures being developed to realise quantum computers. The degree gives you the dual competence, deep physical understanding and computational expertise, that the emerging quantum technology sector increasingly requires from its practitioners. Graduates with this combination of skills are in growing demand across the quantum technology industry, which is expanding rapidly in the UK and internationally, as well as in related roles in computing, data science, aerospace, defence, telecommunications, and scientific research. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in quantum information, photonics, condensed matter physics, or computer science, where the specialist foundations of this degree provide an excellent basis for advanced research and for careers at the forefront of a genuinely new field of technology.
