About this course

Mining engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines, concerned with the safe, efficient, and sustainable extraction of mineral resources from the earth. Metals, coal, industrial minerals, and aggregates are essential to construction, manufacturing, energy, and technology, and the engineering challenges involved in locating, accessing, and processing mineral deposits are substantial. Modern mining engineering also grapples with the environmental and social responsibilities that come with resource extraction, including land restoration, water management, and community engagement in the areas where mines operate. This part-time programme at the University of Exeter, which includes a foundation year, provides professional engineering education accredited by the Engineering Council to the standards set in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence. This means the degree is recognised as providing the academic foundation for progression toward Chartered Engineer status. You will develop knowledge of geology and mineral exploration, underground and surface mining methods, rock mechanics, mine ventilation, mine planning, environmental management, and the health and safety frameworks that govern the industry. Mining engineering graduates work in mining companies, mineral processing operations, environmental consultancies, government geological and regulatory agencies, and internationally in the mining sectors of countries across Africa, Australia, South America, and elsewhere. The global nature of the mining industry means that career opportunities are genuinely international, and Chartered Engineer status with the relevant professional institution is the standard professional qualification for senior roles. Further study at master's or doctoral level is also available for those interested in research or advanced specialist roles in geotechnics, mine planning, or environmental management in the extractives sector.
