BSc Biomedical Science
About this course
Biomedical science is the laboratory-based discipline that underpins modern medicine, working at the interface between biological research and clinical practice. Biomedical scientists investigate the causes and mechanisms of disease, develop and validate diagnostic tests, and carry out the analytical work that informs patient care in hospitals and research institutions. The field spans haematology, immunology, microbiology, clinical biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular genetics, and is central to advances in everything from cancer diagnostics to infectious disease management. Aston University's three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in industry, giving you substantial professional experience in a laboratory or healthcare setting before you complete your degree. The programme also includes a year abroad, broadening your academic and personal horizons in a genuinely international context, and students have access to work placement opportunities throughout. In the taught components you will develop laboratory skills alongside theoretical understanding of human physiology, pathophysiology, and the diagnostic sciences. You will learn to apply scientific methods rigorously, to interpret data critically, and to understand how laboratory findings translate into clinical decisions. Biomedical science graduates are well placed for careers as biomedical scientists in the NHS and private healthcare, where clinical laboratory roles require a relevant degree. Many graduates progress through professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council. Beyond clinical settings, graduates work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, medical device firms, public health bodies, and academic research. Postgraduate study, whether a master's in a specialist biomedical field, a conversion to medicine or pharmacy, or a PhD in biomedical or clinical science, is a common and well-supported route for ambitious graduates.
