BA Games Art
About this course
Games art is the discipline concerned with the visual creation of the digital worlds, characters, environments, and assets that make video games visually compelling and immersive. It sits at the intersection of traditional artistic skill and technical production, requiring artists who can design and create high-quality visual content while also understanding the technical constraints and pipelines of game development. As the games industry has grown into one of the largest creative sectors in the world, the demand for skilled games artists with both creative imagination and technical proficiency has expanded considerably. At Coventry University, this three-year, full-time degree develops your ability to create game art that combines creativity with the coding and technical skills that professional production demands. You will learn to design and build environments, characters, and assets for games, working with industry-standard software and production methods. The programme balances artistic development with the technical understanding of how assets are integrated into interactive systems. The degree includes a sandwich placement year and the possibility of a year abroad, as well as work placement opportunities, all of which give you the chance to develop professional skills in real game development environments before you graduate. Graduates from games art programmes work in the video games industry as environment artists, character artists, texture artists, concept artists, and technical artists. The creative and technical skills developed in games art also transfer into film and television visual effects, animation, virtual reality and augmented reality production, and interactive media design. Many graduates work in studios of all sizes, from large multinational publishers to independent studios and start-ups. Others build freelance careers or pursue postgraduate study in games design, visual effects, animation, or related disciplines.
