About this course

Fine art is the practice of making work that thinks visually and materially, engaging with ideas, experiences, and perceptions through forms that can be encountered and interpreted by others. It encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, video, installation, performance, and hybrid forms that challenge the boundaries between them. What unites these diverse practices is a commitment to making with intention and reflecting rigorously on what has been made, in dialogue with art history, critical theory, and the questions of the present. At Middlesex University, the fine art programme is taught by practising artists and scholars who actively contribute to contemporary art discourse. You will have access to well-equipped studio and workshop facilities, including dedicated spaces for painting, sculpture, printmaking, and digital media, and you will develop your practice within a critical and supportive community. The programme includes a foundation year, which gives you a structured entry into fine art thinking and practice before you commit to the full degree, helping you develop your creative voice and your understanding of art history and theory in a supported environment. As you progress you will develop an increasingly independent studio practice, guided by regular tutorials and critiques that challenge you to deepen and extend your thinking. Graduates from fine art programmes pursue careers as practising artists, as well as in education, arts administration, gallery and museum work, community arts, art therapy, and the creative industries. Many develop their practice alongside other professional activities, and the critical and creative skills fine art develops are valued across many fields. Further study at postgraduate level in fine art, curating, or arts management is available for those who wish to develop their practice or move into specialist roles.
