BA Animation
About this course
Animation is the art of creating the illusion of movement, and it has become one of the most expressive and technically demanding disciplines in the visual arts. From feature films and short-form content to games, interactive media, advertising and immersive experiences, animated storytelling is everywhere, and the skills that underpin it, drawing, design, character development, narrative construction and technical production, are in genuine demand across the creative industries. At Edge Hill University, this part-time programme, which is recognised by ScreenSkills, immerses you in the full range of animation practice. You will develop your drawing and design skills alongside technical proficiency in the digital tools and production pipelines that professional animators use. You will learn to develop characters, construct stories, build worlds and bring them to life on screen, working across different animation techniques and styles. A sandwich year placement gives you the opportunity to gain substantial professional experience in the industry, and a year abroad broadens your creative and cultural perspective. Work placement experience is embedded throughout the programme, keeping your learning connected to professional practice and helping you build the industry networks that matter when you graduate. Critical and contextual understanding is also developed alongside practical skills. You will study the history and theory of animation, examine how the medium has evolved and diversified, and develop the reflective capacity to situate your own practice within broader cultural and artistic conversations. Collaboration is a key part of professional animation, and the programme builds the team-working skills that studios and production companies value. Graduates from animation programmes move into roles in film and television production, games development, advertising, digital media, interactive design, and character design. The technical and creative skills you develop are versatile, and many graduates build portfolio careers that span several areas of the creative industries.
