About this course

Law is the framework of rules and principles through which societies organise themselves, allocate rights and duties, resolve disputes, and exercise and constrain power. A law degree develops the ability to read and reason with complex texts, to construct logical arguments, to evaluate competing interpretations, and to understand the institutional contexts in which legal decisions are made. These skills are valuable both within the legal profession and across a wide range of other careers in which analytical rigour and the ability to navigate rules and structures matter. At Goldsmiths, this three-year full-time qualifying law degree reflects the college's distinctive intellectual character: critical, socially engaged, and committed to understanding law in its social and cultural context rather than as an isolated technical system. Goldsmiths has a long tradition of interdisciplinary, critical approaches to knowledge, and its law programme draws on this tradition, engaging with legal theory, socio-legal studies, and questions about law's relationship to power, inequality, and justice alongside the technical legal content that a qualifying degree requires. You will study the core areas of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and public law, equity and trusts, and land law, developing the analytical skills and legal literacy that are the foundation of professional legal work. Alongside this, the programme engages with questions about what law is, how it operates in society, and how it reflects and reinforces or challenges social structures. Goldsmiths' law graduates move into solicitor and barrister training, the civil service, legal NGOs and charities, academia, journalism, policy work, and a wide range of other careers where legal knowledge and analytical ability are valued. The college's distinctive approach attracts students who want to think critically about law as well as practise it.
