BA English
About this course
English literature is a discipline that takes reading seriously, developing the analytical capacity to engage with texts in depth, to understand how literary form and language work, and to situate what you read within the historical, cultural, and theoretical contexts that shape its meaning. It is also a discipline that cultivates the capacity for original, sustained argument in writing, and the ability to communicate complex ideas with clarity and precision. These are among the most widely transferable intellectual skills available from any university degree. At Birkbeck this three-year full-time BA draws on the exceptional cultural resources of its Bloomsbury location, a neighbourhood once home to Virginia Woolf and the wider Bloomsbury Group and still surrounded by some of the most significant literary and cultural institutions in the country. You will encounter cutting-edge contemporary authors alongside canonical texts, developing your analytical capacity and expanding your knowledge and understanding of the full breadth of English literary culture. The curriculum is varied and flexible, allowing you to develop expertise in the periods, genres, and theoretical approaches that most interest you, guided by internationally renowned academics, researchers, and practising writers. The programme develops not just your reading but your writing: the skills of critical argument, textual analysis, and precise expression that English demands are developed intensively across the degree. Graduates pursue careers in publishing, journalism, teaching, communications, the civil service, law, the cultural sector, marketing, and public relations. The analytical and writing skills that English develops are among the most valuable of any humanities degree, and Birkbeck's London location provides exceptional access to the industries where these skills are most valued. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in English, creative writing, or cultural studies.
