BA Cymraeg/Mathematics
About this course
Cymraeg and mathematics is a distinctive combination that brings together one of Europe's oldest living languages and one of the most universal of all intellectual disciplines. Welsh, Cymraeg, has a literary tradition stretching back fifteen centuries and is a vibrant community language in Wales today, with active support from the Welsh Government and a growing range of professional contexts in which Welsh-medium skills are genuinely valued. Mathematics, with its rigorous logic, its abstract structures, and its applications across science, technology, and economics, provides a very different but equally powerful way of engaging with the world. Studying both together produces graduates who are genuinely distinctive in the professional market. At Prifysgol Aberystwyth, this three-year, full-time programme develops your Welsh language proficiency alongside a serious mathematical education. In Welsh, you will engage with the language at an advanced level, developing reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, studying Welsh-language literature and culture, and deepening your understanding of the language's history and its contemporary role in Welsh life. In mathematics, you will study across core areas including calculus, algebra, statistics, and mathematical methods, developing the rigorous analytical thinking and quantitative skills that mathematics demands. Aberystwyth is one of the heartlands of Welsh-language life and education, and the university offers a genuinely Welsh-medium academic environment that enriches the study of both subjects. Graduates with this combination are well placed for careers in Welsh-medium education, the civil service in Wales, data analysis, statistical work, the Welsh-language media sector, and any professional field where mathematical ability is valued alongside the capacity to work in Welsh. The combination is rare and genuinely valued in the Welsh professional landscape. Further study in either Welsh or mathematics at postgraduate level is also a natural route.
