About this course

Physiotherapy is a clinical profession concerned with restoring and maintaining movement and physical function across the full span of human life. Whether working with someone recovering from a stroke, managing a child with a neurodevelopmental condition, supporting an elderly patient with a fall-related injury, or helping an athlete return to sport, physiotherapists draw on an understanding of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and psychology to assess complex presentations and design individual treatment plans. It is a discipline grounded in science and shaped by compassionate, person-centred practice. This three-year full-time programme at York St John University is accredited by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and validated by the Health and Care Professions Council, which means that on graduation you can apply for registration to practise as a Chartered Physiotherapist. You will develop your diagnostic skills and your ability to rehabilitate patients with both acute and chronic conditions across all age groups. The programme integrates clinical placements throughout, so that your theoretical learning and your practical development in real healthcare settings proceed together. You will work under the supervision of qualified professionals in a range of clinical environments, building the competence and confidence that safe and effective practice requires. Registered physiotherapists work across a wide range of settings. The NHS employs physiotherapists in hospitals, community health services, mental health teams and specialist rehabilitation units. Private practice, sport and exercise medicine, occupational health, defence medicine and research are all well-established alternative routes. The scope of practice in physiotherapy has expanded considerably in recent decades, and many physiotherapists go on to develop specialist expertise in areas such as musculoskeletal health, neurological rehabilitation, respiratory care or paediatrics. Postgraduate study can lead to advanced clinical roles, consultant physiotherapist positions or academic careers in physiotherapy education and research.
