What competencies does the graduate have? Studies in engineering within seafaring prepares you for Chief Engineer Officer duties. After completing the studies and the onboard training you can apply for a certificate of competency for Watch Officer Engineer from the maritime authorities (Traficom) which is required in order to work in such positions. After completing the marine engineering degree and having gained sufficient work experience as an Engineer Officer, you will be able to apply for a certificate of competence as a Chief Engineer Officer. The objective of the programme is to train competent Chief Engineers. The main tasks of a Chief Engineer include being responsible for the operations and technical safety of the ship’s technical department, in a way which is safe for both people and the environment. The maritime engineering programme covers the key tasks of an Engineer Officer. The studies provide knowledge in mechanical engineering, seafaring skills, ship technology and electrical engineering. Different projects completed in cooperation with the business community, for example in connection with the degree thesis, provide the possibility for networking and specialisation within the field. What teaching methods are used in the programme? Diverse teaching methods are utilised in the degree programme. In theoretical studies, lectures format is used when appropriate. To a large extent, studies take place in different digital learning environments and digital platforms. Distance learning methods are continuously developed , such as taking part in lectures virtually or watching recorded lectures. A significant portion of the studies is supervised onboard training on merchant ships and in machine workshops. In addition, simulation exercises take place in training simulators, various workshops and laboratories. In what types of positions and organisations do graduates work? Graduates of the degree programme are qualified Chief Engineers for Finnish, European and international careers. The training also offers possibilities for working in leading positions in land-based organisations withing the maritime field, such as in power plants, shipbuilding, logistics, finance and the insurance sector.
