About this course

Canine behaviour, training, and performance is a specialist discipline that applies scientific understanding of animal learning, cognition, and behaviour to the practical work of training dogs for a wide range of purposes, from companion animal behaviour modification through to working dog performance in sporting, assistance, and professional contexts. At Wrexham University, this part-time programme develops your knowledge of canine cognition, learning theory, ethology, and the principles of reward-based and evidence-based training. You will study animal behaviour science alongside the practical techniques used in training dogs for obedience, agility, assistance work, and behaviour rehabilitation. The programme is suitable for those with an existing practical interest in working with dogs who wish to develop a stronger scientific foundation for their practice, and for those looking to enter the profession with formal academic qualifications. Graduates of canine behaviour and training programmes work as professional dog trainers, canine behaviour consultants and counsellors, assistance dog trainers, sport dog coaches, kennel and rescue workers, and in roles with working dog units in the police, military, and customs services.
