About this course

Civil engineering is the oldest of the engineering disciplines and in many ways the most directly visible: it is responsible for the roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, dams, ports, flood defences and buildings that constitute the physical infrastructure of modern societies. As that infrastructure ages, as populations grow and concentrate in cities, and as climate change puts new stresses on water systems and coastal environments, the demand for civil engineers who can design, build and maintain robust and sustainable infrastructure has never been higher. At Aston University this four-year programme is an integrated masters degree, combining undergraduate and masters-level study in a single qualification that takes you to the depth of engineering expertise required for professional practice. The programme includes a year abroad, extending your experience of different engineering challenges, climates, and construction environments. A strong emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility runs through the curriculum, reflecting the reality that contemporary civil engineering must address the environmental impact of what it builds. You will study structural engineering, geotechnics, water resources, transportation, and construction management, developing the technical knowledge and project skills that civil engineering practice demands. Civil engineering graduates work in consultancies, contractors, government agencies, local authorities, utility companies, transport bodies, and a growing range of environmental and infrastructure organisations. Roles include structural engineer, project engineer, geotechnical engineer, transport planner, water resources engineer, and construction project manager. Many graduates pursue chartered engineer status through the Institution of Civil Engineers, one of the most respected engineering qualifications in the world. Postgraduate study in structural engineering, transport, water engineering, geotechnics, or sustainability is an option for those who wish to specialise or pursue research careers in an increasingly complex and important field.
