About this course

In the Biomedical Engineering Degree Program at the University of Oulu, you get an excellent basis for designing health technology products and digital health services for people as part of their everyday life. You will receive a multidisciplinary master's degree in engineering that combines theory and practice, which is a combination of information, measurement, software and telecommunications technology applied in health technology, imaging and natural sciences and biomedicine. The degree gives you unique, comprehensive expertise, from biomaterials to entire healthcare service systems. Teaching is carried out in close cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine. In addition to the technologies developed by health technology companies, you will also develop a strong understanding of how technology is utilized in medicine as part of healthcare in hospital environments and research laboratories. The applicant can select from three specialisation areas as follows: (1) In the Medical Data Analysis specialisation, you will gain extensive knowledge in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, signal and image processing and programming. (2) Biomedical Materials and Imaging specialisation prepares students for a career in research and expert tasks in fields such as medical imaging and physics, biomechanics and biomaterials, and radiotherapy. (3) In the Internet of Medical Things specialisation you will focus on sensors, healthtech electronics and software and wireless technologies of health-care systems. The MSc thesis completes the degree and can be made in a research group of the university or in industrial company. The University of Oulu has offered high-quality biomedical engineering education for over two decades and through research has been actively involved in the development of the industry in Finland and internationally. After graduation, you can use your expertise in various healthtech R&D tasks in Finland and abroad.
