BSc Natural Sciences
About this course
Natural sciences is a broad and integrating discipline that allows you to study the physical and biological world without being confined to a single specialism. Where conventional science degrees require you to commit early to chemistry, physics, biology, or earth sciences, natural sciences allows you to work across multiple disciplines, building connections between them and developing a breadth of scientific understanding that more specialised programmes cannot offer. The connections between the sciences often turn out to be where the most interesting questions live. This part-time programme is delivered by the Open University through distance learning, making it possible to study the natural sciences at degree level without attending a campus. The Open University has extensive experience in delivering rigorous science education flexibly, supporting students through online materials, tutorials, and home experiment kits where hands-on practical work is required. The distance learning format suits people who are working, caring for others, or studying from locations where campus attendance is not practical, and the part-time structure allows you to progress at a pace that fits your life. You will explore areas across the natural sciences, which may include biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, and mathematics, developing both the content knowledge of each discipline and the scientific reasoning, experimental thinking, and data analysis skills that run through all of them. The ability to think across disciplinary boundaries is increasingly valued in a world where complex problems, from climate change to pandemic preparedness, require people who can integrate knowledge from multiple scientific domains. Graduates from natural sciences programmes move into careers across the science sector, including research, environmental consultancy, education, science communication, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and the public sector. The breadth of the qualification makes graduates adaptable, and many find that their ability to work across disciplines is a genuine competitive advantage. Some continue to postgraduate study in one of the constituent disciplines or in an interdisciplinary field.
