About this course

Description The Master’s programme in Techno-Anthropology combines competence in carrying out anthropological studies of techno-science cultures with technological insight. The programme will focus on how l with collaboration between technical experts in different settings and other stakeholder groups, e.g. consultancy firms, R&D departments at multinational companies, advisory bodies, international organisations, public institutions, think tanks, NGOs, or universities. You work theoretically and empirically on how such collaborations can be turned into sustainable technological innovation and responsible decision-making regarding new technologies. You also use anthropological theory and methods to study how technology is used, and how it influences users. During the first two semesters, you get an overview of different theoretical approaches to the Science/Technology - Culture/Policy/Society interface. You will get acquainted with Science and Technology Studies, Post-normal Science, organization theory, as well as get insight into how ethical reflections can entangle concrete cultural settings. During the second year of the programme, you will conduct a major fieldwork in an organisation that works with science and/or technology. Career Opportunities As a techno-anthropologist you can combine technological knowledge with cultural understanding. This enables you to address cross-disciplinary problems as described below. Candidates who possess such skills are in high demand, and they have numerous possible career paths - both in companies, NGOs and different authorities. About the Degree The Master in Techno-Anthropology can also be studied at the campus in Aalborg. Admission Students with one of the following bachelor degrees can apply for enrollment: Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Techno-Anthropology, Aalborg University (entitled to admission) Professional Bachelor’s degree in Health or Technical Science Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technical Science, Humanist Technology, Art and Technology, or Communication and Digital Media A bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Market and Management Anthropology, Sociology or Psychology if it has addressed technology in a socio-technical perspective as a central element. This requirement must be documented in a letter of motivation enclosed the application of enrollment, and possibly discussed at an interview. The MSc in Techno-Anthropology has restricted admission. 60 (Copenhagen) and 40 (Aalborg) student places are offered each September. If there are more applicants than seats, applicants will be prioritized.
