BA Animation
About this course
Animation is the art and craft of creating the illusion of movement, bringing characters, environments, and stories to life through a sequence of images. It spans a wide range of techniques, from traditional drawn and stop-motion animation to three-dimensional computer-generated work and motion graphics, and it is a discipline that demands both technical skill and strong creative vision. An animation degree develops your ability to think visually, to tell stories through movement and timing, and to master the technical tools through which contemporary animation is made. At Wrexham University, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, giving you a thorough grounding in the core skills and digital knowledge you will need before the main degree begins. You will gain experience in the digital skills and techniques used to bring ideas to screen through a range of animation methods, choosing to specialise in the approaches that best suit your creative direction. The programme develops your imagination alongside your technical competence, building the portfolio of work that professional animation employers expect. You will study drawing and visualisation, character design, storyboarding, rigging, 3D modelling, and the principles of movement and timing that make animation convincing. The creative and critical understanding of how animated stories work is developed alongside your practical skills throughout the degree. Graduates go on to work in film and television animation, games, advertising, interactive media, virtual reality, and a wide range of other creative industries where animated content is produced. Roles include animator, character designer, rigging artist, motion graphics designer, and visual effects artist. Many build freelance practices alongside studio employment. Postgraduate study in animation or a related creative discipline is an option for those wishing to develop their practice further or move into research and teaching.
