About this course

Architectural technology is the technical discipline at the heart of the architecture, engineering and construction industry. Where architects generate and develop design ideas, architectural technologists translate those ideas into detailed technical specifications, ensuring that buildings are constructed safely, efficiently and in compliance with regulatory requirements. The role requires deep knowledge of construction materials, structures, building physics, environmental systems, digital design tools and project management, and it sits at the point where design vision becomes built reality. At the University of Roehampton this three-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year for those who need additional preparation before the main degree. You will explore the roles carried out by professionals in the architecture, engineering and construction sector, gaining an understanding of professional responsibilities, codes of conduct and the complex relationships between different stakeholders across the design and construction process. You will learn about the structure of the industry, the UK construction market and the sector's economic and social significance. As the degree progresses you will develop expertise in technical drawing, building information modelling, construction technology, environmental performance and project delivery. A sandwich year gives you the opportunity for substantial professional experience before your final year, a year abroad adds an international dimension, and work placement opportunities throughout the programme connect academic study with real professional environments. Graduates typically move into roles as architectural technologists, building information modelling managers, technical project coordinators, construction managers and sustainability consultants in architectural practices, construction companies and consultancies. Many pursue professional membership of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists. Postgraduate study in architectural technology, construction project management or a related field is also a natural continuation.
