About this course

Building Services Engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, installation and management of the mechanical, electrical and environmental systems that make modern buildings function. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning, lighting, plumbing and drainage, fire safety systems, lifts, electrical distribution, renewable energy technologies, and the control systems that integrate all of these are the domain of building services engineers. In an era when buildings must meet increasingly stringent energy performance standards and decarbonisation requirements, the expertise of building services engineers is more critical than ever. At Teesside University, this part-time programme develops your mathematical and technical foundation for building services engineering, with particular emphasis on the analytical skills needed to address the complex problems that arise in engineering practice. You will study differential equations and numerical methods alongside the thermodynamic, fluid dynamic and electrical principles that underpin building systems design, developing competence in identifying and applying the most appropriate analytical method for a given problem. The programme builds progressively on existing technical knowledge, making it well suited to students who are already working in related engineering or construction roles and want to develop their professional qualifications while in employment. Graduates of Building Services Engineering programmes work in consulting engineering practices, mechanical and electrical contracting firms, local authorities, facilities management organisations, and construction companies. Roles include design engineer, project engineer, energy consultant, sustainability adviser, and facilities manager. The transition to low-carbon buildings and the growing demand for sustainable building technologies mean that building services engineers with expertise in energy efficiency, heat pumps, solar systems and smart building controls are in particular demand. Many graduates pursue professional membership of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers as their careers develop.
