BSc Computer Science (includes foundation year)
About this course
Computer science is the study of computation, algorithms, data structures, programming languages, software systems, and the theory that underpins them. It is a discipline of both intellectual depth and extraordinary practical importance, because the software and systems that computer scientists build run virtually every aspect of the digital economy. The field is constantly evolving, with advances in machine learning, distributed systems, cybersecurity, and human-computer interaction opening new areas of research and practice at a remarkable pace. At Aberystwyth, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who are interested in computer science but who do not yet have a sufficient or relevant background to enter the degree directly. The foundation year provides the mathematical, computational, and academic foundations needed for the main degree, which then covers programming, algorithms, data structures, software engineering, computer systems, and a range of more specialist topics. The full programme runs over four years in total, with a typical entry tariff of 72 points for the foundation year route. Graduates of computer science programmes work as software developers, systems engineers, data scientists, cybersecurity analysts, web developers, technical project managers, and computer science researchers across every sector of the economy. The combination of technical depth and analytical rigour that a computer science degree develops is one of the most consistently sought-after in the graduate market. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in computer science, artificial intelligence, or cybersecurity to develop more specialised expertise, or move directly into industry roles where the demand for qualified computing professionals continues to significantly outpace supply.
