About this course
Computer Science and Mathematics is a joint honours combination that reflects the deep relationship between two disciplines that have always depended on each other. Computer science draws heavily on mathematical foundations, from logic and discrete mathematics to probability and linear algebra, and some of the most important advances in computing have come from mathematical insights. Mathematics, in turn, has been transformed by computation, with algorithmic thinking and numerical methods extending what is tractable and solvable. Studying both together gives you fluency in each and an understanding of how they reinforce one another in practice. At Prifysgol Aberystwyth, you will study this combination over three years, full time. You will cover the core areas of computer science, including programming, algorithms and data structures, computer architecture, software engineering, artificial intelligence, and networks, alongside mathematical topics such as calculus, linear algebra, probability, statistics, analysis, and discrete mathematics. The combination allows you to bring genuine mathematical rigour to computational problems, and to use computational methods to tackle mathematical ones. You will develop strong programming skills alongside the ability to construct formal proofs and work with abstract mathematical structures. The degree builds both depth in the two disciplines and awareness of the ways they connect and diverge. Graduates of Computer Science and Mathematics programmes are highly sought after across the technology sector and beyond. Software development, data science, machine learning, cybersecurity, financial modelling, cryptography, and research are all natural destinations. The formal mathematical training is an asset in roles that require rigorous reasoning about algorithms, security, or statistical models, while the computing skills make the mathematics practically applicable. Many graduates continue into postgraduate study in computer science, mathematics, artificial intelligence, or closely related fields, and research doctorates in either discipline are a well-trodden route.
