BA Design
About this course
Design at Goldsmiths is not simply a technical or vocational training but a critical and conceptual practice concerned with what design is and what it might become. Goldsmiths has a long tradition of producing designers who challenge conventions, interrogate assumptions and bring intellectual rigour to creative work, and the BA Design programme reflects that approach by combining practical studio work with critical and theoretical inquiry. Design here is understood as both a way of solving problems and a way of asking them, producing graduates who can propose new possibilities rather than simply responding to existing briefs. This three-year full-time programme at Goldsmiths in London, with a typical entry tariff of 152 UCAS points, equally values creative practice and conceptual exploration. You will develop practical design skills across a range of media and contexts, while also engaging with design history, theory and criticism. The programme encourages you to challenge pre-existing conditions and to design work that generates new understanding as well as functional outcomes. London's extraordinarily rich design, art and cultural landscape provides an exceptional context for this kind of study. Graduates from Goldsmiths' Design programme pursue careers across graphic design, product design, service design, interaction design, design research, art direction, brand identity, curation and design consultancy. Many work in design studios, advertising agencies, technology companies, cultural institutions and independent practice. The critical and conceptual thinking developed through the programme is also valued in roles that go beyond conventional design practice, including strategy, education, cultural policy and the creative industries broadly. Postgraduate study in design, design research or related creative fields is a well-established next step for those who want to develop a specialist practice or pursue academic careers.
