BA Drama
About this course
Drama is the art of making human experience visible and meaningful through live performance. It sits at the intersection of literature, history, politics, and collective imagination, drawing on traditions stretching back to ancient Greece and continuously reinvented by every generation of theatre makers. At its core, drama asks what it means to be human, and it investigates that question in public, in real time, in front of an audience. At Edge Hill University, you will develop both as a practitioner and a critical thinker. You will explore performance skills alongside an examination of theatre's social and political role in the twenty-first century, considering how performance can challenge power, represent marginalised communities, and shape public discourse. The course includes a sandwich year, giving you extended time in the creative industries to apply your skills in professional settings, and options to study or work abroad broaden your perspective on theatrical traditions beyond the UK. Work placements embedded in the programme mean you build industry connections while you study, graduating with a portfolio of practical experience alongside your degree. You will learn to use your voice, body, and imagination as tools; to collaborate under pressure; to analyse texts and performances with rigour; and to develop your own creative vision. These capabilities transfer far beyond the stage. Drama graduates are consistently valued for their communication, empathy, and ability to work constructively with others. Careers from this degree span the creative industries and well beyond them. Many graduates work as performers, directors, producers, stage managers, or arts administrators. Others move into community arts, education, theatre in health and social care, or arts journalism. The skills developed through drama, including public speaking, storytelling, and collaborative problem-solving, also open doors in marketing, media, public relations, and the third sector. Further study routes include postgraduate performance, drama therapy, or research into theatre and cultural studies. Whether you pursue a life on stage or take your creative thinking elsewhere, this degree provides a rigorous and distinctive foundation.
