BA Education (with integrated foundation year)
About this course
Education as an academic discipline is broader and richer than the professional preparation it sometimes implies. It draws together psychology, sociology, philosophy, history, and linguistics to ask fundamental questions: how do children and young people learn? What shapes the development of knowledge, skills, and identity over time? How do educational institutions reflect and reproduce social inequalities? And how should curricula and pedagogy be designed to support all learners effectively? These are questions with genuine intellectual depth, and engaging with them seriously prepares you not only for work in education but for critical participation in a society that depends on it. At Aberystwyth University, this four-year full-time degree includes an integrated foundation year, which builds the academic knowledge and study skills needed before you begin the main degree programme. This structure makes the course accessible to students from a wide range of backgrounds and ensures you are well prepared for the more demanding study that follows. Across the programme, you will explore child and adolescent development, drawing on psychology and sociology to understand how learning unfolds across different stages and contexts. Curriculum design and educational policy feature prominently, giving you the tools to evaluate how educational systems are organised and reformed. Linguistics contributes an understanding of how language acquisition and use intersect with learning, while sociology provides the framework to examine how factors such as class, race, gender, and family background shape educational experience and outcomes. Graduates of education degrees enter a wide range of careers. Many pursue initial teacher training through a PGCE or school-direct route and go on to teach in primary or secondary schools. Others work in early years settings, further education, educational policy, youth work, social care, training and development in the private sector, or educational consultancy. Postgraduate study in educational psychology, special educational needs, educational leadership, or policy provides a pathway to specialist and senior roles. The degree also serves well as a foundation for careers in the helping professions more broadly, including social work, counselling, and community development.
