BEng Engineering Design
About this course
Engineering design is the creative and technical discipline concerned with developing innovative solutions to real-world problems, bridging the gap between conceptual thinking and manufacturable products and systems. Design engineers are not simply executors of specifications handed down by others; they are the people who identify problems, generate ideas, evaluate options, and bring new solutions into being. The discipline combines engineering science with creativity, user understanding, and the practical knowledge of what can actually be made and how. At Robert Gordon University, this four-year BEng (Hons) has been developed directly in response to industry demand for graduates who can think creatively about the challenges businesses face and develop innovative solutions to meet them. You will build a solid foundation in the engineering sciences, including mechanics, materials, and manufacturing processes, while also developing the design skills that allow you to apply that knowledge creatively. The programme emphasises the full design process, from problem definition and concept generation through prototype development, testing, and refinement, using modern design tools and methods that reflect current professional practice. RGU's strong connections with industry in Scotland and beyond give the programme a realistic and commercially grounded character, preparing you for the kinds of design challenges you will encounter as a professional engineer. Graduates of engineering design degrees are sought by employers across manufacturing, product development, consultancy, and the broader technology sector. The ability to combine technical rigour with creative problem-solving is particularly valuable in companies developing new products and systems, where design engineers are central to the innovation process. Other graduates move into project management, systems engineering, or technical sales, where an engineering background combined with design thinking is a strong combination. Many also go on to postgraduate study in engineering, product design, or innovation management.
