BSc Games Development
About this course
Games development encompasses the full breadth of making interactive digital experiences, from the programming and systems engineering that make games run to the design thinking that makes them engaging and the artistic work that gives them visual and sonic character. The games industry is one of the world's largest entertainment sectors, and it draws on an exceptionally wide range of skills, creating roles for programmers, designers, artists, audio specialists, producers, and QA engineers within collaborative development teams. This three-year, full-time programme at Edge Hill covers the full pipeline from design to implementation of games software, developing your technical and creative capabilities across the key disciplines of game development. You will learn programming, game engine usage, game design theory, level design, and project management, working on projects that build your portfolio and your experience of collaborative game-making. The programme includes a placement year and a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to gain professional experience in the industry and to engage with games development in a different national context, both of which broaden your professional profile and your understanding of how games are made in different production environments. Graduates move into roles across the games industry as programmers, game designers, level designers, producers, and QA testers, as well as into adjacent creative technology roles in interactive media, simulation, and virtual reality. The placement year is typically important in securing the first professional role, and the portfolio of project work developed during the degree is the primary way that studios assess the capability of applicants. Further study in games development, computer science, or digital media is an option for those who wish to develop specialist technical or creative expertise.
