BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design is the practice of visual communication, using typography, image, colour, and composition to convey ideas and information across print, digital, and environmental media. It is a discipline that sits at the intersection of creative thinking and practical problem-solving, requiring both aesthetic sensibility and an understanding of how audiences read, navigate, and respond to visual material. From branding and publication design to user interface design and motion graphics, graphic designers shape the way the world looks and the way communication works. At Wrexham University, this part-time degree includes a foundation year, providing a supported entry route into the discipline for students who want to build their knowledge and skills before progressing to the full honours programme. In the foundation year you will be introduced to the fundamental principles of graphic design, developing both theoretical understanding and practical ability across key areas including typography, image-making, layout, and digital tools. The subsequent degree deepens this foundation, developing your capacity for independent creative thinking, professional practice, and critical engagement with the history and theory of design. You will build a portfolio that demonstrates your conceptual range and technical skill, learning to take creative briefs from idea through to realised outcome. The part-time structure gives you the time to develop your practice at a pace that works alongside other commitments, and the foundation year means that you enter the full degree with a secure grounding in the discipline. Graduates from graphic design programmes work as graphic designers, brand designers, art directors, UX and UI designers, typographers, and visual communicators in studios, agencies, in-house creative departments, and as freelancers. The discipline's skills are applicable across a wide range of sectors, from publishing and advertising to technology, healthcare, education, and the cultural sector. Many graduates continue to develop their practice through postgraduate study or by building independent design careers.
