BA History
About this course
History is the study of the human past in all its complexity, examining the events, structures, ideas, and experiences that have shaped societies across time and around the world. It is not simply the memorisation of dates and facts: it is the critical analysis of evidence, the construction of arguments from incomplete and contested sources, and the development of frameworks for understanding how and why things change. Historians learn to think carefully about causation and context, to evaluate competing interpretations, and to communicate complex ideas with clarity and precision. At Birkbeck College in London, this part-time BA in history is taught by world-leading academic researchers and designed to serve both students with specific career objectives and lifelong learners who want to deepen their understanding of the past. You will have access to a wide range of history modules, stretching around the world and across thousands of years, allowing you to explore the areas of history that most interest you while building the research and analytical skills that historical study demands. Birkbeck's distinctive model of evening and weekend teaching is designed for working adults, making it possible to pursue a serious degree in history without giving up your professional or personal commitments. History graduates go on to work in a wide range of careers that value the analytical and communication skills the discipline builds. Common destinations include education at secondary and tertiary level, heritage and museums, the civil service, law, journalism, publishing, research, and the charitable sector. Many Birkbeck graduates bring their history degree to bear on careers they are already pursuing, enriching their professional practice with the analytical depth and contextual understanding that historical study develops. Many also go on to postgraduate study in history, heritage studies, archival practice, or related fields, deepening their expertise for academic or professional roles.
