BA Interior Architecture
About this course
Interior architecture occupies a distinctive space between architecture and design, concerned not with the exterior form of buildings but with what happens inside them: how space is organised, how light moves through it, how materials and finishes create atmosphere, and how people move, work, live and feel within the environments that surround them. It is a discipline that demands both creative vision and technical competence, combining the aesthetic sensibility of a designer with knowledge of structure, building systems, and the regulatory frameworks within which interior design must operate. At Middlesex University this programme is offered on a part-time basis and includes a foundation year, which provides an introductory stage for students developing the creative and practical skills needed before entering the main degree curriculum. Once established in the programme, you will learn to develop spatial concepts from initial brief through research, sketching, modelling and digital representation to a coherent and professionally presented design proposal. You will work across a range of scales and typologies, from domestic interiors to commercial, retail, hospitality and public-sector environments. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you direct experience of professional practice before you graduate. Graduates of interior architecture and design work in interior design studios, architecture firms, retail and hospitality design consultancies, property development companies, and set and exhibition design. Some work as freelance designers or in specialist areas such as healthcare environments, retail design or workplace strategy. Roles span design, project management, specification writing, client liaison, and contractor coordination. Postgraduate study in interior architecture, spatial design, or architecture is an option for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue academic practice. The combination of creative thinking and technical grounding the programme develops prepares you for a profession in which imagination and rigour must work together.
