BA International Relations
About this course
International relations is the study of how states, international organisations, non-governmental bodies, and other actors interact across borders, and of the forces that shape the global order. It examines how power, diplomacy, conflict, cooperation, trade, and ideas flow between countries and regions, and how international institutions attempt to manage the tensions and inequalities that result. It is a discipline rooted in history and theory but animated by the most pressing questions of contemporary global life. At Coventry University, this part-time programme is designed for students who want to understand the world and to develop the knowledge and analytical skills needed to work in global affairs. A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement opportunities are available, giving you the chance to gain practical experience in relevant professional settings and to engage with international contexts directly during your studies. You will study the major theories of international relations, the history of the international system, the role of international law and organisations, the politics of conflict and security, and the economic dimensions of globalisation. The programme also addresses contemporary challenges such as climate change, migration, human rights, and the changing nature of global power, developing your ability to analyse complex situations and to think critically about competing interpretations and policy responses. Graduates are well-placed for careers in international organisations, NGOs, government, diplomacy, journalism, think tanks, and the humanitarian sector. The analytical and research skills the degree develops are valued across a wide range of professional contexts, and many graduates pursue postgraduate study in international relations, global security, development, law, or public policy. The programme is designed for those who aspire to make a global impact, whether through institutions such as the United Nations, through advocacy organisations, or through careers in business, media, and public service.
