About this course

Journalism is the practice of gathering, verifying and communicating information in ways that serve the public interest, hold power to account and help citizens understand the world they live in. It is one of the oldest and most socially important professional crafts, and it has been transformed in recent decades by the digital revolution, which has simultaneously created new platforms and audiences, challenged traditional business models and raised new questions about speed, accuracy, ethics and the relationship between professional journalism and the broader media landscape. At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, offering a supported entry route for students who bring the ability and enthusiasm for degree-level study alongside strong writing and communication potential. The degree also includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, giving you substantial professional and international experience before you graduate. You will develop the practical skills of reporting, interviewing, writing for different platforms and audiences, and working to professional deadlines, alongside a critical understanding of the media industry, journalism ethics and the social and political role of the press. The placement year and work placements are particularly important in journalism, where professional networks and a portfolio of published work are central to launching a career. Journalism graduates go on to careers in print, digital, broadcast, radio and multimedia journalism, as well as in content creation, communications, public relations and media production. The writing, research and critical thinking skills the degree develops transfer well into publishing, policy, law, the civil service and a wide range of other communication-focused roles. Many graduates also build careers in specialist journalism, covering areas such as sport, science, politics, business, culture or international affairs.
