About this course

Law is the discipline that underpins the organisation of society, governing the relationships between individuals, institutions and the state, and providing the frameworks through which rights are protected, disputes resolved and accountability enforced. To study it is to engage with questions of justice, power and the social contract that are as ancient as human civilisation and as urgent as today's headlines. It demands precision of thought, rigorous reading and the ability to construct and evaluate complex arguments from competing principles and facts. At Aberystwyth University this programme includes an integrated foundation year, designed for students who need to develop the academic skills and subject knowledge required to enter degree-level law study. The foundation year builds those foundations carefully, and from the second year onwards you will study the same subjects as students on the standard law degree, examining the core areas of English law including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, equity and trusts, and property law. The oldest and most established law department in Wales provides the institutional context, with a rigorous and stimulating academic environment. The full programme runs over four years full time. Law graduates have strong career prospects across a wide range of fields. Many enter the legal professions, qualifying as solicitors through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or as barristers through the Bar Course. Others move into the civil service, finance, business, compliance and regulatory roles, journalism, politics and international organisations, where the analytical and communication skills law develops are consistently valued. Postgraduate study in law, international law or a related discipline is a natural route for those seeking specialist professional or academic careers.
