BEng Mechanical Engineering With Stem Foundation Year
About this course
Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest and most versatile of the engineering disciplines. It concerns the design, analysis, and manufacture of physical systems, from individual components and machines to complex integrated systems spanning vehicles, energy infrastructure, robotics, and precision instruments. Mechanical engineers need to understand forces, materials, thermodynamics, fluid behaviour, and control systems, and to translate that understanding into designs that work reliably, efficiently, and safely in the real world. At Edge Hill this degree is offered with an integrated STEM foundation year, designed to develop the key transferable skills and subject-specific knowledge that students need before entering the engineering degree itself. The foundation year is particularly valuable for students who have the aptitude and motivation for engineering but whose prior qualifications in mathematics and the sciences need to be broadened or consolidated before degree-level study begins. On completing the foundation year you will progress into the mechanical engineering programme, where you will study mechanics, thermodynamics, materials, fluid dynamics, manufacturing processes, electrical and control systems, and engineering design. You will develop practical skills in the laboratory and workshop as well as the analytical and computational abilities that modern engineering demands. Mechanical engineering graduates are in demand across almost every sector of the economy. Aerospace, automotive, energy, defence, manufacturing, construction, rail, and consumer products all employ mechanical engineers in design, analysis, project management, and research roles. Many graduates work towards professional registration as chartered engineers, and the academic preparation provided by the degree supports that ambition. Those who want to deepen their expertise can continue to postgraduate study or research in specialist areas of mechanical and manufacturing engineering.
