BA Media and Communications
About this course
Media and communications is a degree that develops both critical understanding of how media works and practical skills for working within it. Media is no longer something that happens on television and in newspapers. It is a pervasive infrastructure of platforms, devices and formats through which people communicate, consume entertainment, access information and participate in public life. Understanding how media shapes society, who controls it, how it generates meaning and what its effects are is the analytical task of media studies. Developing the practical capabilities to create, manage and distribute media content is the vocational task that programmes like this increasingly combine with that critical foundation. At Roehampton, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year and a work placement, providing an extended entry route into the degree along with substantial professional experience. The foundation year builds the academic skills and subject knowledge needed for degree-level media study. You will explore a wide range of platforms including social media, digital media, television, film, radio and emerging technologies, gaining both practical experience and critical insight. The sandwich year and work placement give you direct professional experience in the media or communications industry, strengthening your graduate profile and building the network that matters in a competitive sector. You will develop your ability to analyse media texts and industries critically alongside your practical skills in content production, communication strategy and digital media, graduating with a degree that connects academic and professional competence. Graduates move into journalism, broadcasting, digital content, social media management, public relations, advertising, marketing, arts management and media education. Some graduates develop careers in policy, research or cultural organisations. Further study in media, journalism or communications is a natural option.
