BSc Paramedic Science
About this course
Paramedicine is a clinical healthcare profession that works at the frontline of emergency and urgent care, responding to patients who are acutely ill or injured in a wide range of environments, from road traffic collisions and cardiac arrests to mental health crises and falls in the home. Paramedics are highly skilled autonomous practitioners who assess and treat patients independently, make clinical decisions under time pressure, and initiate life-saving interventions before or during transport to hospital. It is a profession that demands clinical knowledge, practical skill, calm under pressure, and the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and colleagues in stressful situations. At Coventry University, this three-year, full-time BSc prepares you to work at the frontline of patient care in dynamic, unpredictable environments. You will develop clinical knowledge across the range of conditions paramedics encounter, including trauma, cardiac and respiratory emergencies, neurological events, obstetric situations, and mental health crises, alongside the practical skills of assessment, treatment, and decision-making. Clinical placements are integral to the programme, giving you direct experience of pre-hospital care with ambulance services and in other healthcare settings throughout your studies. Graduates are eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as paramedics and to work with NHS ambulance trusts, air ambulances, voluntary ambulance services, event medicine organisations, and the military. The paramedic profession offers opportunities to specialise in areas such as critical care, mental health, community paramedicine, or education, and many paramedics progress to consultant or advanced practice roles. Postgraduate study in paramedic science, pre-hospital care, or emergency medicine is another route for those who wish to develop their clinical expertise or pursue research.
