BSc Paramedic Science
About this course
Paramedic science prepares you to work as an autonomous healthcare professional in pre-hospital and emergency settings, responding to medical emergencies, trauma, and acute illness and making critical clinical decisions, often with limited resources and under significant pressure. It is a demanding discipline that combines the biomedical science of human physiology and pharmacology with the clinical skills of patient assessment and treatment, the professional ethics of autonomous practice, and the personal resilience to work effectively in high-stakes situations. Paramedics are often the first clinicians to see a patient in crisis, and the quality of that first contact can be decisive. At Wrexham University, this three-year full-time programme integrates substantial clinical placement experience with academic study from the outset. You will develop your understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology, alongside the clinical skills needed to assess and manage a wide range of emergency and non-emergency conditions in community, pre-hospital, and hospital settings. The programme is designed to meet the standards required for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council, which is the legal prerequisite for practising as a paramedic in the UK. A typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects the programme's clinical rigour. On completion of the degree and successful registration with the HCPC, you can work as a paramedic with the NHS ambulance service, with independent providers, in primary care, and in a growing range of specialist and extended roles. The profession has expanded significantly in recent years, with paramedics taking on roles in urgent care centres, GP practices, and specialist clinical teams, reflecting the broader recognition of paramedics as highly skilled autonomous practitioners. Further study and specialist training can lead to roles in critical care, air ambulance services, clinical education, and advanced practice.
