BSc Physics
About this course
Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences, seeking to understand the laws that govern matter, energy, space, and time from the subatomic scale to the structure of the universe. Its methods, mathematical rigour, and habit of building precise quantitative models have made it the foundation of much of modern science and technology. From quantum mechanics, which underpins the behaviour of all matter at the atomic level, to classical mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, and relativity, physics deals with principles of extraordinary generality, and physicists develop a mode of thinking that is applicable to an unusually wide range of problems. At Edge Hill University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year with work placement and a year abroad, giving you a combination of professional experience and international study that enriches both your academic development and your career prospects. The sandwich year allows you to work in a physics-related or technically demanding environment, applying your analytical and problem-solving skills in a professional context. The year abroad gives you the chance to study physics in a different educational and cultural setting. Your studies cover classical and modern physics in depth, including mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, optics, and relativity, supported by laboratory work that develops your experimental skills and scientific judgement. Physics graduates are valued across a remarkably wide range of sectors. The analytical and quantitative skills developed through a physics degree translate directly to careers in engineering, technology, finance and investment, software development, data science, and scientific research. Many graduates enter the engineering or aerospace sectors, while others work in telecommunications, medical physics, energy, and the environmental sciences. Teaching, both in schools and at university level, is another important destination. The placement year often leads directly to graduate employment, and many employers specifically recruit physics graduates for the problem-solving rigour they bring.
