BSc Physics with Quantum Technology
About this course
Physics with quantum technology is a programme that combines the rigorous study of physics as a discipline with a focused engagement with one of its most consequential and rapidly developing frontiers. Quantum technology exploits the principles of quantum mechanics, superposition, entanglement, and coherence, to build devices and systems with capabilities that classical physics cannot achieve. Quantum computing, quantum sensing, quantum cryptography, and quantum communications are all areas where fundamental physics is being translated into technologies with the potential to transform computing, security, and our ability to measure the world with extraordinary precision. This three-year, full-time programme at Exeter develops your understanding of physics from the classical foundations through to quantum mechanics and its technological applications, giving you both the theoretical grounding and the practical skills to engage with cutting-edge work in this area. The programme includes a placement year and a year abroad, both of which offer valuable opportunities to work in research or industry settings and to engage with physics in different academic and professional contexts. The combination of foundational physics, quantum theory, and practical placement experience positions you well at the boundary between academic science and industrial application. Graduates of this programme are well prepared for careers in the rapidly growing quantum technology sector, working in companies developing quantum computing hardware and software, quantum sensing devices, and secure communications systems. Beyond the quantum sector, physics graduates with strong mathematical and analytical skills are valued in data science, financial modelling, engineering, and consultancy. Academic research in quantum physics, atomic physics, or photonics is a natural route for those who wish to pursue a research career. The year abroad and placement year give graduates additional professional experience that strengthens their position in both academic and commercial contexts.
