About this course

Education as an academic discipline goes well beyond the practical preparation of teachers to examine education as a social institution, a political project, a site of cultural reproduction and a domain of human development. It draws on philosophy, sociology, psychology, history and policy studies to address questions about what education is for, how it works, who benefits from it, and how it can be improved. Students who study education as a degree subject develop critical understanding of the systems, theories and practices through which learning is organised and sustained in schools, communities and wider society. At Edge Hill University, which has a long-established reputation in education and teacher training in the north-west of England, this three-year programme provides a thorough academic and reflective grounding in the study of education. You will examine educational theory and history, the sociology of education, child and adolescent development, curriculum and pedagogy, special educational needs, inclusion, policy and the professional dimensions of educational work. The programme develops analytical and critical thinking alongside the practical understanding of how education operates in real schools and communities. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points. Graduates move into a wide range of education-related careers. Many pursue initial teacher training following the degree, leading to Qualified Teacher Status and careers in primary or secondary schools. Others work in educational leadership, special educational needs support, early years education, youth work, family learning, educational research, curriculum development, Ofsted and inspection roles, and the many public and third-sector organisations that work alongside schools and families. Some continue to postgraduate study in education, social work, psychology or public policy.
