BSc Physics with Theoretical Physics
About this course
Physics with theoretical physics takes the ambition of physical science to its most abstract and mathematically demanding level. Physics at any level is the attempt to understand the fundamental laws governing the universe, from the smallest subatomic particles to the vast structures of cosmology. The theoretical emphasis deepens that project, moving into the mathematical frameworks, quantum field theory, general relativity, and statistical mechanics, through which physicists seek the most fundamental descriptions of nature. It is among the most intellectually rigorous of all undergraduate programmes, and the skills it develops are valued across an extraordinary range of careers. At Loughborough this four-year full-time degree builds on the foundational principles of physics while developing strong problem-solving, mathematical, and computational skills. You will study classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, special and general relativity, and the mathematical methods that underpin modern theoretical physics. The programme develops the ability to work with complex abstract concepts and to apply mathematical reasoning to physical problems with precision. A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to study in a different academic environment and gain an international perspective on physics education and research. Loughborough's strong physics department supports a research-informed curriculum, and the typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects the mathematical demands of the programme. Physics graduates are among the most sought after in the graduate labour market. Careers in research, data science, finance, engineering, computing, modelling, and consultancy all draw on the analytical skills that physics develops. Many graduates enter roles in the technology sector, national laboratories, financial services, and academia. Postgraduate study in theoretical physics, astrophysics, or mathematical physics is a natural path for those drawn to research, while the transferable analytical skills of a physics degree open doors across virtually every sector.
