BEng Architectural Engineering
About this course
Architectural engineering sits at the intersection of architecture and engineering, concerned with the design and performance of buildings as integrated systems. Where architecture focuses on the spatial, aesthetic and cultural dimensions of buildings, and structural or services engineering focuses on the technical systems within them, architectural engineering brings these together, developing professionals who can think across the design and technical dimensions of the built environment simultaneously. The result is a discipline that is increasingly valuable as buildings become more technically complex, environmentally demanding and performance-driven. At Coventry University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, a work placement and a year abroad. The sandwich and placement elements give you direct professional experience in architectural practice, engineering consultancy or construction, developing the practical skills and professional awareness that employers value alongside academic training. The year abroad exposes you to different design cultures and building traditions, which is valuable in a field that is increasingly global in its reference points and workforce. You will develop knowledge across architectural design, structural engineering, environmental systems, building physics, energy performance, construction technology, project management and the digital tools, including building information modelling, that are reshaping design and construction practice. The integration of design thinking and technical rigour is what makes architectural engineers particularly well placed to lead building projects from conception to completion. Graduates go on to careers in architectural engineering consultancy, building services engineering, structural design, sustainable building design, urban development and project management. Some pursue further professional qualifications with engineering institutions or the architectural profession. Postgraduate study in architectural engineering, sustainable design or related fields is available for those who want to specialise further.
