BSc Architecture
About this course
Architecture is the discipline that shapes the built environment, designing the buildings and spaces in which people live, work, learn, worship, and gather. It demands both creative imagination and technical rigour, requiring architects to reconcile the aesthetic, functional, structural, environmental, and social dimensions of every building they design. Architecture is also deeply connected to its time, responding to the values, technologies, and challenges of the society in which it is practised, and sustainability has become one of the defining concerns of contemporary architectural education and practice. At Roehampton University, this three-year full-time degree with a foundation year gives you the opportunity to develop as an architect within a studio environment that emphasises both collaborative and independent working. You will learn how buildings come together through joint projects with engineering and construction students, through drawing, modelling, and building in dedicated studios and workshops. History and theory of architecture ground your design thinking in the broader cultural and intellectual tradition of the discipline, while site visits and study trips show you how design decisions translate into built reality. Sustainability runs through every project as both a technical and an ethical question. The programme is delivered in dedicated facilities equipped for contemporary architectural education. A sandwich year and work placement opportunities are built into the programme, giving you professional experience alongside your studies. A degree in architecture at part one level is the first stage of a three-stage professional qualification. Graduates typically proceed to further study at part two and then undertake professional practice experience and the part three examination to become registered architects. Others apply their skills in urban design, interior design, building consultancy, heritage, construction project management, or related fields. The analytical and spatial thinking the degree develops are valued across design and the built environment professions.
