About this course
Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences, concerned with understanding the basic laws that govern the behaviour of matter and energy, from the smallest subatomic particles to the largest structures in the universe. It is a discipline built on mathematical rigour and experimental creativity, requiring you to construct precise models of physical systems, test them against measurement, and revise them when the evidence demands it. Physics trains a way of thinking that is analytical, quantitative, and deeply committed to getting things right, and that way of thinking is valuable far beyond the discipline itself. At Cardiff University this three-year full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in the core areas of physics, including classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, and special relativity, as well as an introduction to areas at the frontier of current research such as condensed matter, astrophysics, and particle physics. You will develop both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills, learning to design and carry out experiments, analyse data rigorously, and report findings clearly. Cardiff's research strengths, which include gravitational wave physics, condensed matter, and astrophysics, give the teaching a connection to live scientific questions. Physics graduates are among the most employable and versatile of all science graduates, precisely because the analytical and quantitative skills the subject develops are valued across so many fields. Careers in finance, technology, data science, engineering consultancy, research, and science policy are all common destinations, alongside more traditional physics-adjacent roles in research, instrumentation, and the photonics and semiconductor industries. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in physics or related fields, with a doctorate opening careers in academic and industrial research.
